I moved to Americus with my family about 11 years ago. My wife (Therese) and I still live in Americus although our children have all moved to other parts of the country. Our two youngest children both graduated from Americus High and from Georgia Southwestern State University. They have moved on to graduate school at Iowa State University and Angelo State University.  In May 2022 I retired as Dean of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Biology at GSW. Our oldest daughter and her husband live in Roanoke, VA where she works as a genetic counselor.

I’m fairly new to bagpiping but music and other musical instruments have been part of my life for a very long time. I started with piano lessons when I was 5 years old. I played brass and woodwind instruments through high school and sang in choirs well into college. I tried various string instruments without great success (I really wanted to play the banjo, but couldn’t stay with it).

I decided in early spring 2021 that I would learn to play the bagpipes. I’ve always enjoyed the distinctive sound of the bagpipes and always thought it would be great to learn to play. I decided that I would learn so that I could play at my Mom’s memorial service (July 2021). I did play a couple of tunes as the family scattered her ashes and it was very poignant and moving.

Although I spend a lot of time now playing the bagpipes, I do have other interests. Therese and I enjoy bicycling, hiking, kayaking, fishing and camping. We’ve spent part of the last two summers traveling and camping in the western US. We really enjoy the high desert scenery and weather.

I love the bagpipes. I love hearing the tunes. I spend a lot of time practicing to be a better piper. When I play I feel deeply connected to my Scottish and Irish ancestry and heritage. I hope to have the opportunity to share that with you.

Cheers,
